| Once a rural Texan boy who merely decided that painting signs and store windows was easier than picking cotton from sunup to sundown, Mark English has now spent over sixty years reaching heights of which other artists only dream. |
| It is a testament to great skill and vision that he experienced a meteoric rise as one of America's top magazine illustrators. In 1967, the Artists Guild of New York named English "Artist of the Year." He became honored so often by New York's Society of Illustrators that he would become their most awarded illustrator; in 1983, he would be named to their prestigious Illustrators Hall of Fame joining such notable illustrators as N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and Frederick Remington. The impressive assignments which came to English included the creation of thirteen stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. Mark English shared his wisdom and skill with both aspiring and professional illustrators when he served as Artist in Residence at Hallmark Cards. And all this represented only the first phase of his artistic career. |
| In the mid-1990s English left the world of commercial art to focus on his fine art. Today Mark English fine art paintings hang in major corporate and private collections; his works have been shown in Canada, Japan, and throughout the United States, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. |
| English's paintings reveal a masterly command of techniques and materials which together express a vision that is wholly his own. Elements of abstraction and impressionism play with his subjects. A pot of flowers, a subtly faceless figure in dramatic dress, a horse, all appear with varying degrees of obscuration as though the canvas, rich in color and texture, has only begun to define his subjects. As though there is so much more we do not see. As though there is life beyond the plane of canvas. |

| In the landscape paintings that have long defined his work, English presents the American heartland he's come to know so well from his Midwest home. Rolling hills, patchworks of fields, trees and mountains all appear (and recede) as though from an omniscient viewpoint. We are seeing from a vantage point of creation. The limits of a representational genre are long gone. Mark English balances the dynamic energy of reality with all that pulsates just beyond our conscious reach. |
| "'Contemporary painting, Impressionist painting, landscape painting, figurative painting,' these categories barely capture the unique look of Mark English's paintings," notes Gallery Owner Peggy Lanning. "Mark English is a true master who has the experience and skill to portray on canvas precisely that which is in his heart." |
