| Nature has always called to Chris Deverill. He's often lived next to wildlife habitats and finds himself next to one again, sculpting javelinas outdoors with the real thing snuffling the ground nearby. Rabbits are frequent visitors and find themselves replicated in bronze often, their crazy personalities expertly captured by the artist. |
| Deverill grew up in Hawaii and resided for years in both Alaska and Colorado; his earlier career took him all over the globe. Always, his love of art, particularly bronze, steered him to world-class art shows and to pieces he loved enough to collect. And the great outdoors continually called to him. In Alaska Deverill became an accomplished nature photographer with many awards to his credit. He also raised sled dogs and, in 1982, ran the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. |
| It was only later in life that Deverill found the time and resources required for the substantial investment that working in bronze requires, enabling him to begin creating his own body of work. "I like the timelessness of bronze," he says, "that it can exist for centuries and [still] be relevant." Of course creatures of nature became a dominant subject of his. And Deverill's engaging, full of heart personality led him to re-imagine his animals in elongated, eclectic forms forms that captured fully the mischief and emotion, the curiosity and humor which animals so purely display. |

| Studying at length under the tutelage of top sculptors, Deverill mastered the challenging lost wax technique; he continues his extensive studies even today as his fascination with this process pushes him into new ground. "I prefer to use a loose, organic style in working with clay, rather than too formal or representational," Deverill notes; although he has worked in those styles as well. "I like to do quirky, fun pieces most, [ones] with a sense of humor. I like the idea of lifting someone's mood at the same time that I'm bringing a personality to the piece I create." |
Deverill works in his home studio most every day now usually with music cranked up high. Generally, several pieces are in the works at once or he at least has several more in mind. From start of the armature and clay sculpture to completion of the entire bronze process, a piece can take four months to complete, depending on size. And size is another factor in Deverill's beguiling pieces: They can range from table-top size to seven feet tall!
