![Avner Zabari - A Featured Artist for the Lanning Gallery [Sedona, Arizona]](main-images/zabari-title.jpg) |
| |
| Avner Zabari is an uncommon
artist. His fanciful yet elegant style, his primitive
aesthetic and rich use of deep, textured color define each
piece of furniture he creates. The artist gives credit to
the skillful hands of his grandfather, a successful
silversmith, for what he refers to as, "my first peek into
the world of beauty."

As a young man Zabari traveled from his native Israel to
Europe, enjoying the romance of its cafes and the intimacy
of European evenings. He then journeyed to South America
where the relics left by primitive cultures first impressed
him. “When I was in South America, I met an old man who
would create the most brilliant colors. I stayed with him
for two days and studied his techniques. We didn't speak,
because I spoke no Spanish, but he taught me a lot about
color.”
With no formal art education, Zabari began painting – on
everything. From canvas to slabs of scrap wood, the budding
artist practiced with an indiscriminating brush. "I was
fascinated with the temperament of the wood. The way the
color would bleed or hold depending on the consistencies of
the wood.” Zabari began creating art from discarded
furniture, resurrecting chairs, tables, wardrobes and
anything else he could find. With an intent eye on color,
Zabari honed his skills, mastering his methods of wood
staining. Interest in his creations began to rise and what
began as a hobby grew into his livelihood. Zabari then began
learning the nuances of furniture making. Days building
pieces in his garage and nights spent in the library
provided him the formal education he required. |

| Zabari’s unique hand-made creations literally took off
like an explosion. His pieces are now being collected as far
as Japan, Europe, Australia and South Africa. |
|
| The beauty of his pieces begin with
natural pine that is enhanced by a sun-weathering process. Five to
ten layers of paint and pigment are applied at different stages,
resulting in a magnificent blend of colors. A rainbow of rare and
unusual dyes saturate consoles, tables, chests and cabinets. Zabari
is constantly experimenting with unconventional materials bringing
stone, wood, metal and leather into his repertoire. Adorned with
curious compartments, primitive faces and mystical symbols, his
furniture adds atmosphere and sociability to any space while
maintaining utility and comfort. Zabari’s colorful and deeply
personal art furniture has consistently impressed collectors with
new aesthetics while staying true to the methods and artistry for
which he has become known. |
