"My world is essentially about meditation - before, during and after painting. Sometimes amorphous images come in to play, other times I consciously use sacred mantras in the paintings. Layering occurs in some paintings that allow the viewer to see through veils of paint into another world. One could also be reminded of landscape and hopefully a peaceful place and in others the view could be considered a landscape of the mind. All in all, my intention is to capture, for one brief moment, a stillness that cannot be held onto – 'The Mystery.'" ~ Ani Yellowhammer

Artist Ani Yellowhammer's roots are in Virginia, her home state, where she began painting as a child and where she attended Old Dominion University and The College of William and Mary. She supported herself through exhibitions of her paintings even before traveling to New York to study art at the Malden Bridge Art School. For many years after this she continued to live in Virginia while working as an artist and a curator of corporate art collections. It was after raising her three sons that she relocated to New Mexico, to fully pursue her fine art career.

Ani went to New Mexico not only to reinvigorate her life as an artist but also to seek out alternative medicine ways - to help with the lingering effects of a serious auto accident. This is what led her to Mr. Yellowhammer, a Native American from Oklahoma, who began teaching her old medicine ways. Their friendship evolved into one of great strength and led Mr. Yellowhammer, before his death, to give Ani his name – a name she respectfully bears.

"My work is about the mystery of the Universe," Yellowhammer says, "the inner and outer spaces, the inner and outer landscapes." Painting, for her, is a process of reaching into her subconscious and connecting with essential life forces - and her skills and vision as an artist allow her to create alluring surfaces that alternately conceal or reveal what lies beneath. Vibrant fields of color are a hallmark of Yellowhammer's paintings, from electric blues to red-oranges to yellow-golds, appearing often as sources of light seen through veils of darker tone. Her technique is one of applying and sanding back paint to a desired effect; her finished results range from opaque, matte or high gloss. "I like to think of color as energy that emits from the painting outward," she says.

Yellowhammer's work is in collections of numerous corporations across the U.S. and in private collections around the world, including England, Singapore and Australia.
