Growing up in a wooded area of New England
gave artist Gail Taylor a lifelong love of nature, a love that
translates undeniably into her artwork. While still young it was
an aunt who influenced Taylor’s artistry; it was her mother who
imbued her with the self-reliance and strong work ethic that has
helped build the successful career she now enjoys. As an adult
Taylor lived in various parts of the U.S. until settling for
many years in California. There she attended Chaffey College and
raised a family. Taylor concentrated on painting, working in a
stone cottage – formerly a home to migrant workers – that she
converted into an art studio. |

When an area merchant unexpectedly gave her a
generous supply of surplus copper sheeting a new phase of
Taylor’s artistic career began. She had learned a little about
etching on copper at Chaffey, so she took the copper sheets,
bought some acid and other supplies, and began experimenting.
Today, Taylor is a well established artist with an extraordinary
body of work that combines her love of nature, as expressed in
so many of her designs, with a stunning and exciting amalgam of
color, texture and composition.

| Taylor now maintains a
studio in the desert where the strong sun and
the desert colors have added a new dimension to
her art. Working outside daily, in temperatures
often over 100F, Taylor reflects that, “Working
with an uncooperative substance can be very
challenging when balancing the manipulation
between the material and atmospheric elements.
[But] I love working with metal. Watching what
emerges during this process is exciting to me,
because the end result is always a surprise.”

With a
constant focus on natural elements found in
landscapes and various characteristics
attributed to trees and leaves in the forest,
the excitement of color, dimension and texture
are a connecting chord in Taylor’s work. For
her: “To honour trees is to grasp life.” |
