Hallman’s technique is an
entirely unique and laborious one. Her saturation of color is
achieved by using pure, rich tones of dry pigments, in powder
form, applied to paper. Once she is satisfied with the layout
of colors, Hallman sprays a clear acrylic to set the pigments
in place. Masking off different areas with tape and applying
pressure with her hands, she then applies layers of pigment.
No brushes are used. Selected areas are scraped away revealing
previous layers and all tape is removed. In some instances
acrylic mediums are then applied, using the masking off and
tearing away technique. A thin color wash and/or combinations
of oil mixed with dry pigment may be applied to the top
surfaces. In each piece, Hallman uses a combination of these
methods, applying colors in layers and scraping away until the
piece reaches what the artist feels is its maturity. |
